10 Questions, 1 Teacher: INTO Manchester

Today in our 10 Questions, 1 Teacher series Ruth Gee, who teaches the Graduate Diploma in Management programme at INTO Manchester tells us what she loves most about being a teacher and a mentor for international students.

1. What’s your teaching style?

Probably demonstrator or facilitator, some lessons need more guidance than others. It’s more rewarding for students when they work together and share their knowledge and experience to achieve tasks.

2. What do you like most about your job?

Teaching an interesting subject and seeing that the students are absorbed, having fun and producing a standard of work that lets me know I have done my job properly!

3. What would you be if you weren’t a teacher at INTO?

A showgirl or an accountant – probably an accountant!

4. What was your favourite subject when you were at school?

English or Drama.

5. What’s the best thing about Manchester?

The galleries, the theatres and cool bars. Manchester is friendly and easy to get around on a bicycle.

6. What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

Watching track cycling at the Velodrome, aerobic classes, running my own business, seeing friends, the constant battle to decorate and upgrade my flat, trying to get better with gardening, and watching trash tv.

7. Which book are you currently reading?

It’s Me, It’s You’ by Jon Richardson.

8. Have you ever studied abroad?

No – I toured the world with Holiday on Ice as their Road Accountant though.

9. Can you describe an average day’s teaching in three words?

Challenging, enjoyable, rewarding.

10. What advice would you give to international students?

The more you communicate with native speakers the better your English will become. Go to music nights, art galleries, theatres, sports events, shops, bookstores – anywhere that you can engage people in conversation. Explore your interests and hobbies, enjoy yourself whilst you are learning – it just makes sense!
