4 reasons why future-focused engineering students choose UWA College

Engineering is one of the fastest-growing fields globally (LinkedIn Jobs on the Rise 2025), making it a smart degree choice for future-focused students. In Australia alone, the nation needs at least 60,000 additional engineering graduates over the coming years to meet ambitious goals in clean energy, housing, defence and decarbonisation (Engineers Australia 2025).

If you want to study engineering overseas, The University of Western Australia (UWA) is a wise choice. This world top 100 institution (QS World University Rankings 2026) is part of Australia’s prestigious Group of Eight universities, the only one of its kind in Western Australia.

If you don’t meet UWA’s direct entry requirements, UWA College offers flexible pathways to get you there. This includes the newly launched Engineering Degree Transfer Program, designed to prepare you for success at UWA. Progress to your engineering degree in as little as 4 months (Accelerated Pathway) or 8 months (Standard Pathway), based on entry requirements, with UWA College’s Engineering Degree Transfer Program.

Read on to discover how UWA College and UWA will set you up for success in your future engineering career.

1. Multiple pathway options to suit your qualifications

UWA College is the ideal place for international students to prepare for undergraduate study at UWA. You’ll study at the heart of UWA’s Perth campus with access to the university’s facilities from day one, backed by personalized academic and English language support designed specifically for international students.

There are two programs available, both offering pathways to an engineering degree at UWA. You’ll need to meet the course entry requirements for your chosen program.

The UWA Foundation Program (8 or 12 months) helps you improve your subject knowledge and English language skills to gain entry into the first year of a wide range of undergraduate degrees at UWA upon successful completion.

The Engineering Degree Transfer Program offers two options, depending on your academic and English language entry requirements, both leading to the second semester of the first year of UWA’s Bachelor of Engineering (Honours).

  • Accelerated Pathway (4 months): designed for students with strong mathematics, science and English foundations, the Accelerated Pathway allows you to dive straight into degree-level engineering units and progress to UWA in just one trimester.
  • Standard Pathway (8 months): the Standard Pathway offers additional support in mathematics, English and sciences alongside degree-level units, giving you more time to build confidence and skills in a supported learning environment before progressing to UWA.

Both pathways offer multiple start dates throughout the year (February, June and October), giving you the flexibility to begin your study journey when it suits your schedule.

2. World-class engineering education with real industry connections

UWA holds truly impressive credentials. This world top 100 university (QS World University Rankings 2026) is part of Australia’s exclusive Group of Eight, placing it among the nation’s elite institutions.

UWA offers far more than overall excellence. When it comes to engineering, UWA holds strong rankings across multiple subjects. Mineral & Mining Engineering is ranked in the world’s top 10 (QS 2026) and Civil and Structural Engineering is ranked in the world’s top 100 (QS 2026).

Degrees here are developed in collaboration with some of Australia’s leading companies, including BHP, Rio Tinto, Chevron, Woodside, Engineers Australia, South 32 and Water Corporation, ensuring that what you learn is directly relevant to industry needs. You’ll also benefit from UWA’s partnerships with leading engineering corporations and cutting-edge research facilities, learning from some of the greatest minds in the field.

With nine majors to choose from, including Automation and Robotics Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mining Engineering and Software Engineering, you can focus on the area you’re most passionate about.

Gain industry-driven skills through units developed with input from our industry partners, designed to prepare you for success in the modern workforce. Enhance your employability and build connections by joining student clubs and societies, including the University Engineers’ Club, UWA Young Engineers’ Club, and Women in Engineering and Mathematical Sciences.

And when you study at UWA, you’ll learn in EZONE, a world-class learning space for engineering students, with flexible workspaces and labs for collaborative learning and industry interaction.

3. Study degree-level units from day one

Here’s what makes the Engineering Degree Transfer Program stand out: by successfully completing this program at UWA College, you will earn up to 24 credit points, which are transferable to your Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) at UWA. This means you’re not just preparing for your degree, but also completing university-level units, entering UWA with your first semester already completed.

During your pathway, you’ll study essential engineering disciplines, including:

  • Mathematics: master advanced mathematical concepts essential for problem-solving as an engineer.
  • Programming: develop problem-solving skills and learn how to design algorithms using Python to build strong computational thinking.
  • Communication: learn to communicate complex engineering concepts clearly and professionally.
  • Chemistry and Physics: build your knowledge in the core sciences that underpin all engineering disciplines.

Throughout your program, you’ll benefit from small class sizes and personalized one-on-one academic support from expert teachers who understand the unique challenges international students face, with tailored assistance in mathematics, science, English and study skills every step of the way.

4. Graduate as an industry-ready engineer in one of the world’s top student cities

UWA College pathway programs are designed with future employability in mind, so before you even start your degree, you’ll have built essential soft skills, including communication, teamwork, presenting, time management and creative thinking.

Perth is an ideal place to launch your engineering career. A hub for innovation and business, the city is home to 30% of ASX-listed company headquarters and a strong economy growing at 3% in 2024–25 (WA State Government, 2025). Globally connected and resource-rich, Perth is full of opportunity across Western Australia’s booming green economy, resources sector and energy industries. And the rewards reflect the opportunity, with average weekly incomes in Perth sitting 5.2% above the national average (Australian Bureau of Statistics, 2025).

Perth is consistently ranked among the world’s top 50 student cities (QS Best Student Cities 2026) and sits in the same time zone (+/- 2.5 hours) as approximately 60% of the world’s population, so staying in touch with family and friends back home is easy.

By living and studying in Perth, you may also be eligible for a Temporary Graduate Visa that is one year longer than if you had studied in Melbourne, Sydney or Brisbane* (Department of Home Affairs, 2026), giving you valuable extra time to gain Australian work experience and build your career.
